Creature comforts (1989)

October 21st, 2007

Written and directed by Nick Park.

Description: This cute claymation piece is a series of interviews with animals in a zoo, who speak about their conditions and surroundings and how some miss their natural habitat. It’s sort of serious and philosophical in a sense, but it’s all made funny by the way the animals are portrayed and their voices and manner of speech, as well as the fact that the animals opinions in the animation were actually real answers from residents of a new housing development. A very nice watch for the little ones and an enjoyable one for the bigger kids as well.

Luxo Jr.

October 20th, 2007

Written and directed by John Lasseter (Pixar).

Description: Today we have a short but significant little animation, the debut animation short from Pixar. Now besides being funny and flawlessly animated, what really makes this tiny animation special is the fact that it was produced in 1986, which is truly amazing considering the level of detail and the quality of the movement and models created using not too advanced technology available at that time. Luxo Jr is truly a little piece of animation history.

Duck amuck

October 19th, 2007

Directed by Chuck Jones and written by Michael Maltese.

Description: Without further ado, a Daffy Duck classic, and perhaps one of the most brilliant of them all. In this one, Daffy battles the evil whims of his animator as his backgrounds, costumes and even physical form continuously change under the puppet-master’s brush. A classic and very funny piece of cartoon animation that you and especially your kids will most certainly enjoy.

Ward 13

October 18th, 2007

Directed by Peter Cornwell, written by Peter Cornwell and Mark Bradridge.

Description: After being involved in a car accident, Ben is taken to a hospital. After waking up, Ben soon realizes that he is not in any ordinary hospital, but in an experimental one, filled with mad doctors and horrifying experimental subjects. The rest of this well put together animation revolves around Ben’s struggle to escape the hospital alive. We won’t tell you how it ends though. Claymation fits this animation perfectly and this is probably one of the reasons it won 10 international awards.

Direct by Anthony Lucas and written by Mark Shirrefs.

Description: Set in a steam-powered mechanical universe, the animation tells the story of Jasper Morello, an aerial navigator fallen out of grace, and his adventurous trip in search of a cure for his plague-ridden homeworld and his one true love. In his journey, Morello discovers and abandoned dirigible by chance, a discovery which leads him through unknown water, to an island dwelled by a terrible monster, a monster which may however hold the cure to the terrible plague. The journey back to civilization is a horrific and turbulent one, ridden with philosophical introspection which finally leads Morello to the realization that the worst plague of all lies within man itself. Although not a watch for everyone, and definitely not one to show the kids, “The mysterious explorations of Jasper Morello” excels through excellent animation and visual imagery, a very well composed story and last but not least the wonderful voice narration and characters.
